Every year in February, Nottingham City Council has a duty under the Local Government Act 2000, to publish the minimum number of signatures required to support a valid petition to request a referendum on whether or not the City should change to a different form of governance.
The minimum number of signatures is equivalent to 5% of the authorities local government electorate.
The number in the notice below will apply to any petition submitted to Nottingham City Council from now until the new figure is published in February 2018.
‘Regulation 4 of the Local Authorities (Referendums) (Petitions) (England) Regulations 2011 provides for the holding of referendum on whether Nottingham City Council should change to a different form of governance, an Elected Mayor. For this to happen, at least 5% of local government electors must sign a petition. Each year the City Council publishes the minimum number of signatures which would be needed to support a valid petition requiring the Council to hold a referendum.’
