The Electoral Register

Nottingham electoral register

The Register of Electors is a list of all the people who are eligible to vote.

A revised register is compiled and is usually published each year on the 1st December. The register is then updated on the first working day of each month from January to September.

The Difference Between the Full and Open Register and Who Has Access to it

There are two versions of the Register of Electors, the full register and the open register (also known as the edited register).

The full electoral register lists the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in public elections. The register is used for electoral purposes, such as making sure only eligible people can vote.

Access to the full Electoral Register is restricted access and can only be used for specific purposes, such as electoral purposes, law enforcement, checking credit applications and calling people for jury service.

The open register, however, is on general sale and is not used for elections. It can be bought by any person, company or organisation and used for any purpose. For example, it is used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details.

Whilst your details must be included on the full register, you do not have to be included on the open register if you do not wish to. Your name and address will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed. Removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote.

If you do not want your details to be included in the open register, just tick the box to say you wish to opt out when you complete your registration or contact the Electoral Services to let them know your open register preference.
